Background calls
With the app in the foreground, desktop and phone ring with no setup. The steps below make an Android phone ring after the app is swiped away or the screen is locked.
-
Open Settings → Background calls and turn on “Calls ring in the background and on the lock screen too”.
-
On the same page, allow:
- Notifications
- Lock-screen call screen
- Pop-up calls: the system’s “Display over other apps”. Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo also need “Show pop-up windows while running in the background” in app permissions.
-
Set battery optimization to Unrestricted. Some phones also need OutBrief allowed to auto-start and run in the background.
-
Check Push wake-up on the same page (see below).
Push wake-up states
Section titled “Push wake-up states”| State | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| On | When the app is not running, the server wakes it with a Google push | Nothing. No other app needed |
| Off | The server has no push set up, or the app and the server use different Firebase projects | Open the app once and check again. Still off? Ask the server admin to check OUTBRIEF_FCM_SERVICE_ACCOUNT |
| Not in this build | The package was built without push | Calls arrive only while the app is open. For push, use a build with it; see Android package |
